I was recently commissioned to create a three-story high school mural for a local high school, Burpengary Secondary State College. The project was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The mural was part of a unique initiative that involved a series of workshops with students and teachers, blending creativity, collaboration, and education into something truly special.
High School Mural Workshop
From the very beginning, the project was a team effort. Feedback and consultations with school stakeholders were essential in shaping the final design, ensuring the mural would be meaningful to both the students and the community. The theme was a beautiful fusion of Japanese and Australian culture, focusing on the deep connection between the two nations. This cultural exchange was represented through a traditional Japanese phoenix, symbolizing rebirth, strength, and transformation.

The design incorporated traditional Japanese patterns, which were given a modern twist to reflect both the historical significance and the forward-looking approach of the school.
The challenge was creating a balance between preserving the integrity of these ancient motifs while infusing them with a contemporary aesthetic.
Challenges
Painting the mural was a physically demanding task, as I worked using a knuckle boom over the course of one week to reach the towering heights of the building. One of the most challenging aspects was the unique approach to colour—getting the hues just right and ensuring they popped against the backdrop of the sky. Despite the difficulties, I’m incredibly proud of the final result, which has transformed the school’s exterior into a vibrant cultural landmark.
Resolution
This school mural project was not just about painting; it was about bringing the students into the creative process and connecting them to something bigger. It was a fantastic reminder of the power of art to bridge cultures and create lasting memories.
